It’s a rainy quarantine day here in California, but I’m here to bring you a slice of sunshine with this post. If you follow me on Instagram then you already understand my mission to breathe life back into my home with simple decluttering projects! It is my honest belief that each little decluttering session has taught me how to have less stuff and so much more joy and functionality in my home. See my DIY pantry from an entry closet, spice drawer organization, and practical storage solution for kid’s toys posts for a glimpse into the organizational goodness.

Have Faith

I’ve opened up about how I grew up in total chaos and never learned how to live a life free of piles of junk. Letting go of things AND organizing my adult life has been rough to say the least. I’m happy to report after years of tiny decluttering and organizing projects, that I am starting to turn a new leaf!! I’m living proof that ANYONE can learn to organize their life and home. When we do this we are able to focus on the important parts of life which is ENJOYING our home as well as having mental clarity to lead our best lives. It’s a win-win 🙌.

I Get It!

Before I share the goods, I must also mention that I know how DAUNTING these decluttering sessions may seem. Whether due to time constraints or the emotional energy needed to let things go, these sessions always get pushed back “for another day”. Know this: every ounce of effort, every hour spent, and thoughtfully planned organizational system ALWAYS pays back in ten fold. It’s one of those scenarios where you must do it for yourself to fully comprehend it’s magic! If you have never decluttered and organized like this before, my hope is that this guide will give you the confidence to start and that you will discover the joy that is waiting for you with each completed session. Simply download and print my free guide, put on some music and get busy!

Two Versions

For this guide I am offering two versions: one for the master bedroom and one for kid’s bedrooms. Note that the kid’s bedroom guide also works wonderfully for playrooms as well! Our house doesn’t have a designated playroom but the kids have such lovely play spaces in their rooms because of our organizational systems in place. If you do not have storage solutions (that are functional AND stylish!) then I highly recommend hopping over to my blog post here where I discuss our favorite systems. I also share my “unicorn box” idea for helping kids decide if they want to let go of items.

Most Requested!

In a poll yesterday on Instagram I asked everyone where their biggest clutter rooms are and the top answer was bedrooms! Below is the guide I created and the EXACT steps I take when tackling a bedroom. What I especially love about having the physical printable is that the kids can SEE exactly what’s to come next which means everyone gets to help! The kids and I actually had SOMUCHFUN (my signature word here 😉) decluttering yesterday! As a fun reward I baked up my favorite paleo chocolate chip cookies with milk for dipping. Needless to say it was a hit and my daughter was especially intrigued with the label maker. She ended up labeling almost everything in her room including her vanity 😂.

Closing Thoughts + Helpful Tips (click to shop)

Set a timer (start with an hour) then check in with YOU. If you can go longer go for it, but have grace on yourself. Too much time spent decluttering will leave you with burnout which is the opposite of what you want!

Label makers are AMAZING. Here is my favorite one that the kids love to help with. Label toy storage for easy cleanup as well as storage bins for out of season clothing. $17 on amazon prime just click to shop!

Under bed storage can be great but ONLY with a few rules. Nothing goes under the bed unless it is in a storage system. I just bought these zippered under bed shoe organizers from amazon!! They are a two pack and only $24 dollars on prime 🙌. I plan to use them as a clever storage hack for Legos and doll clothes!!

Do NOT skip step 6!! With regular scheduled decluterring sessions you will find how much LESS time it takes the more you do it. It can also be so fun. If you have little ones in your home, you are teaching them invaluable life lessons as well as creating treasured family memories. Rewards must not be skipped as well!!

I hope these guides help you like they did for me!! If you use them, I would love to see. Send a message here in comments, shoot me a DM on my Instagram, or tag @thrillofhome in your instastories!! They always make my day 😍. Happy Organizing friends!!
