Thrill of Home by Alyssa Laundry Room Makeover in our Rental Home

Welcome back friends..! Welcome back to our rental home that is. We’ve officially been here for almost exactly 2 months and it’s no surprise that my first mini rental-friendly makeover project was the laundry room. In our last home we had a garage laundry area that was dark and let’s just be real… it was my most dreaded space to be in. I can still picture the boob light and cobwebs 😅. I’m so happy with how this laundry room makeover turned out! If you have ever considered a laundry room makeover but don’t know where to start or feel intimidated- this post will give you confidence to give your space a little polish and sparkle ✨.

Start with an Accent Wall

First, decide what type of accent wall you fancy… and be practical! Since we are renting, I knew I could not use power tools and painting would be silly since we’ll only be here a few months. Peel and stick wall paper was the perfect solution for me and I only needed one roll! If you want save money and don’t mind painting, try a fun accent wall using paint (I did this a TON in our old house) see here. I only added an accent to half of the wall for contrast and visual interest which meant less work. Another way I saved myself from accent wall headache land was by using wallpaper that had a busy pattern so it was virtually impossible to see my (many many) imperfections. Don’t let other blogs fool you, I’m here to tell you wallpapering is HARD and will drive your OCD tendencies insane. Stick with simple patterns if you don’t want to hire the professionals.

Have a Simple Vision

Once you decide on an accent wall, create a mood board. This saves so much time and money because it gives you focus and keeps you from overspending or worse- buying something you don’t love or really need! Canva is a great tool for mood boards… Personally I’ve been using BAZZART on my iphone for years to create my mood boards. Here is the one I created for the laundry room makeover. It’s like a shopping list meets design studio all in one. Some might say I’m addicted to making these 😂.

Lead with Function

Let’s face it, laundry rooms are meant for hard work so lead with function when working on your own laundry room makeover. Think about containers, bins, and any other organization you may need. Lucky for all of us, home organization is way IN. The possibilities for functional and pretty storage options are endless! I utilized our top shelf for extra storage bins and then hacked my own hanger by using shower curtain rods (remember no drilling for me!)I picked up a super affordable hanging organizer that fit perfectly in the empty space to the left of our washer and dryer. A hamper under that and the a cute step stool- and yes the step stool is functional because I’m too short for the front load washer 😂.

Essentials Made Pretty

While it’s totally okay to keep laundry essentials like detergents and fabric softener out in the open, why not opt for making them look pretty? I love this tray that I placed on top of the front load washer with my borax, clothespins, and wool balls (in place of dryer sheets). If I am being honest, I totally store my detergent and softener in that hamper! But having these few “pretty essentials” layered together just makes me feel at peace. Heck I have actually been excited to do laundry now that this laundry room makeover is complete!! Bottom line is this- the tiny bit of effort to make some essentials look happy and peaceful together will work in your favor 🤗.

Greenery

I’m suggesting greenery again, such a shocker right?! I love ending a project with some greenery. I placed my artificial eucalyptus in one of my painted “faux terracotta” vases. If you missed that project check here! This space doesn’t get a ton of natural light but if you happen to have aa window in you laundry room then go for something REAL. My favorite low-maintenance house plants include apothos, zz plant, and peace lillies.

Questions about products I used for this project? I’m sharing my affiliate link for all of the goods right here. A head’s up, an affiliate link means that I may make a small portion of $ when you shop the link directly at no additional cost to you. This helps to support the blog so thank you sweet friends!
