Thrill of Home by Alyssa Christmas Storage and Organization

Happy 2022 friends! As we lean into a New Year we say goodbye to Christmas and holiday decorations… I know, it can seem daunting at first- I’ll be the first to admit January brings on a tinge of melancholy but that’s why I love kicking off the new year with some great decluttering and organization. In this post I’ll share some simple ways we store Christmas and holiday decorations to make way for all that the New Year has in store for us.

We’ve Been Featured!!!

First off, I have some exciting news… Thrill of Home has been featured on Redfin! Redfin shared a wonderful article showcasing new and unique ideas for holiday storage and organization. Head here to read all about it and see my expert tip along with other ideas by experts!!

Starting Point

The starting point for holiday organizing is the take down. Set aside some time to take down the décor and make a few piles to help you when you are ready for storage. I like to make three piles: keep, donate/toss out, and keepsake. When it comes time to putting everything away you’ll have a road map for it all!

Clear a Box or Two

Depending on how minimal or maximal you tend to be with Christmas decorations, you will need a storage box (or two+). Personally I keep two. Clear out the box completely before loading up again with ornaments, stocking, greenery and more.

Group Like Items

Group like items together like bottle brush trees with bottle brush trees, ornaments with ornaments and so on. I like to wrap fragile items in tissue paper or old newspaper then place like Christmas decorations together in one bag. For my ornament storage hack check my Instagram here! Get creative- I promise you don’t need to spend money on special boxes or storage accessories aside from the big storage box.

Label It

All good organizing sessions end with a few labels. Label the storage boxes so next year they are easy to find. *Note: smaller keepsake items like kid’s artwork, homemade ornaments and gifts can be placed in a special smaller box with a label. Each year the kids and I get so excited to take out their special Christmas keepsake boxes to look back on past years memories.

Enjoy the Fresh Space

Once the Christmas decorations are organized and put away in storage it’s time to revel in the fresh clean space! Your home might feel a little bare with the twinkling lights on the tree put away but I encourage you to sit and get excited about empty space, fresh beginnings and an organizing job well done 👍.
