Hey there friends! Easter is one of my favorite holidays and today I get to share our family’s very special tradition for this extra special day. It’s such a heartfelt expression, fun, and also super tasty. We’re making empty Empty Tomb Rolls AKA Resurrection Rolls!
If you love cinnamon rolls (and who doesn’t?!) then you are going to love this easy recipe. Cinnamon rolls are my personal favorite although they do require quite a bit of work. These rolls are made with 4 ingredients including store bought biscuit dough (or sub homemade biscuit dough if you prefer!). It’s not under the normal category of “healthy recipes” that I’m known to share. No this one is just for fun. And along with the fun, a heartfelt expression of the true meaning of our beautiful day of Easter!
Yearning for More
I started this tradition 4 years ago with my kids because I was looking for an easy and fun way to get right to the reason for Easter. Aside from the Easter bunny and egg hunts, I was really yearning for some way to resonate a powerful message with my littles. Being the Pinterest-aholic that I am and have always been, (well before my blogging days here!) I came upon the genius recipe of empty tomb rolls!
Empty tomb rolls bake up in minutes with the smallest bit of work and the biggest part of our heart! I promise you this is one tradition you will look forward to year after year, and reaping beautiful memories of time spent with your family. Let’s get right to it!
*Important note: each step represents a piece of our wonderful story of Easter. I’ve also included bible verses for following along.
You Will Need
1 can biscuit dough, 8 large
1/4 cup melted butter (refined coconut oil may work too)
cinnamon sugar (3 tablespoons sugar + 1 tablespoon cinnamon)
marshmallows, large
3 Ingredients = 3 Days + 3 Days
Biscuits = Linens
Butter and Cinnamon = Oil and spices
Marshmallows = Jesus (my kids think this is funny… it will all make sense in a bit!)
Step 1 : Flatten 1 Biscuit
This biscuit represents the linens Jesus was wrapped in.
Mark 15:46
Step 2: Roll Marshmallows in Spices + Butter
The white marshmallow represents our savior who is sinless and pure.
We represent the oil Jesus was anointed with with butter.
Luke 23:55-56
Step 4: Place Marshmallow in Biscuit Dough then Wrap and Seal
Jesus was wrapped in linen and spices.
John 19:38-40
Step 5: Roll In Butter to Prevent Sticking and Place Seam Side Down in Muffin Tin
If you have a nonstick muffin tin you don’t need to do this although it does add some buttery flavor. I like to dunk the tops of the rolls so they brown a bit at the top!
Step 6: Bake, Cool, Enjoy!
In a 325 degree oven, bake for 12 to 15 minutes until slightly browned.
If some of the marshmallow has spilled out onto the muffin tin, don’t worry! Your rolls will still be round.
When they are done they will be very hot and tempting but do NOT eat until cooled at least 10 minutes. The hot melted marshmallow inside will burn you if you eat it without cooling.
When kids take a bite the will see the “empty tomb” inside. It’s such a fun little surprise! My son was blown away that the marshmallow was gone.
I hope this inspires you for your own Easter traditions this year. Having a treat that’s easy, yummy, and fun to make is always a win in my book. And being able to connect the dots for little ones learning about Jesus’ love for us is the cherry on top of our Easter cake!
Thanks for following along friends!
