Cocoa Bombs may have been the best thing to come out of 2020… can we all agree? When I first saw them I knew I had to create at them at home. I’m actually surprised by how simple they are to make! In this post I will share step by step instructions for ultimate DIY hot cocoa bomb success. I experienced some fails my first try so I’m sharing my best tips here! For a visual video tutorial check my fun Instagram reel right here.

What are Hot Cocoa Bombs?

Hot cocoa bombs are essentially balls of chocolate with hot cocoa mix and mix ins inside and when placed in hot milk or water the outer shell melts just like a “bomb”. It’s a full hot cocoa experience that is quite frankly very addicting… 🤩 Don’t take my word for it, check Tiktok for this viral recipe!! After reading this post and trying them for yourself you may find how fun they are to make and enjoy as well. They can be prepared ahead of time and used whenever you need a hot cocoa pick me up. I’ve been adding them to my coffee for a treat and also for fun family Christmas movie nights and checking out Christmas lights..!

I’m so excited for you to try these!!!

Cocoa Bomb Supplies

Cocoa Bomb molds I purchased from amazon (makes 6 at a time)

Chocolate chips (or melting chocolate)

Refined Coconut Oil (if using chocolate chips)

Decorating chocolate (I like white chocolate, but candy melts work great for fun colors!)

Hot Cocoa Mix

Mix ins (not too many, space is tight) I like mini marshmallows and peppermint bark baking chips

Toppings (optional): sprinkles, crushed candy canes, etc!

Step 1: Make the Shells

Melt the chocolate in microwave or double boiler. I like to do one cup at a time with a tablespoon of coconut oil (unless using melting chocolate) in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, then check and stir. Be careful not to overheat or the chocolate will begin to “cook”.

Pour the melted chocolate into the molds. *TIP: more chocolate is better! I learned from my first attempt that the outer shell should not be thin as it will break easily. Fill the mold about halfway with chocolate and using a spoon “paint” the inside of the mold until the entire space is coated evenly up to the outer rim of the mold.

Then place molds in the fridge (or freezer for super quick set!).

Step 2: Fill the Shells

Fill one shell with the hot cocoa mix and marshmallows, peppermint crunch (if using). *TIP: I don’t recommend filling both shells as then it gets tricky to mold the halves together! And very messy. Since the shells are made with a thick coating of chocolate, there will be enough cocoa to go around in the cup!

Step 3: Meld Shells Together

This is the tricky part, but take heart! By warming a pan and placing one side of the shell on the pan to lightly melt the chocolate on the outer rim, it will be just melted enough to meld to the other half of the shell. *TIP: using your fingers, smooth gently press the outer edges from shell 1 to shell 2 together. My Instagram reel is a great visual for reference! You may also use extra leftover melted chocolate to further “glue” the halves together.

At this point the cocoa bomb may not seem like the perfect little round ball… don’t worry! When you decorate it with a drizzle of white chocolate or candy melt, the imperfections quickly fade away.

Step 4: Decorate

Obviously any extra decoration is optional, but I think it’s the extra fun part where you can get really creative. I chose to drizzle white chocolate on top of mine with some crushed peppermint candy cane. The options are endless! When you make your own hot cocoa bombs please share the photo in comments below or tag me on Instagram so I can see!

Storage

I like to store my cocoa bombs in a large mason jar in the fridge. We keep our home pretty warm so the fridge is not totally necessary, it just depends on the general temperature of your home! I also enjoy that by placing them in a large mason jar, I can easily pull them out for a simple hot cocoa bar anytime! Bonus, they make lovely gifts, add a fun tag or bow for a thoughtful and unique gift for neighbors, friends and family members.

This year, for a sustainable approach I am using Trader Joe’s paper grocery store bags for my wrapping paper! Here I topped the jars with the paper and some twine. Their prints make for such a pretty festive touch.
