Thrill of Home by Alyssa January Refresh- How to Breathe New Life Back Into Your Home After the Holidays

Hi friends! The holiday décor has been taken down, every tree put away and every ornament tucked in its place until next year… so now what? I used to have a hard time transitioning my home décor after the holidays. Now I look forward to it each year because it’s a time to start fresh and get inspired all over again! Today I am sharing how to breathe life back into your home after the holidays. The good news: there is a theme… simple is best, don’t overthink it 🖤.

Textures

Instead of thinking of filling every bare wall just for the sake of filling it, think about textures that make you happy. I love natural textures such as rattan furniture, woven materials, shiny metals, and dried florals. Just by knowing this, when I am out and about shopping I can choose items based off of their overall texture and they always end up working out!

Here I layered my favorite summer hat against the wall by the dried flowers beside the bed. I also hung my faux terracota vases from our curtain hook. Totally outside the box right?! That’s what makes decorating in January so fun. You get to make your home all about YOU and anything goes.

Instead of a nightstand opt for dried florals and woven materials for a natural minimal vibe.

No shelf needed, hang vases instead 🖤

Faux Terracotta

If you missed my faux terracotta tutorial I shared the whole process right here. Spoiler alert: it will cost you pennies to make! Try filling them with dried florals to contribute the muted tones of the pot.

Think Outside the Frame

Think outside the box, or frame for that matter. I grabbed this pretty frame that I fully intended to use as a hallway gallery (it’s been sitting there for MONTHS now!) and some faux flowers I had and created a diy “pressed floral” piece of artwork on a whim. The key is to not overthink the décor. I truly feel when we do this, we get the best of ideas.

Bedroom Refresh

For this refresh I simply used what I had lying around the house. If you don’t yet have neutral bedding it might be something to think about when breathing life back into your home and bedroom. There are so many options! As much as I love color, I love my white bedding because it makes our small room feel light and airy. Any colors I do add really pop and get the attention they deserve!

Cozy is Always in Style

We can’t forget about cozy throw blankets and pillows. We have one small couch in our living room that I like to throw lots of textures onto! Mix up a few patterns but stick with an overall color scheme. Never underestimate the mood boost of seeing your favorite spot all cozied up just begging for you to come sit for awhile ☺.

Incorporating Winter

Before throwing out all of your holiday décor, consider if it can be used through the winter. These paper bag snowflakes I made in December still work for January! And since I’m still working on my basket wall, the snowflakes are the perfect additions in the meantime. Do you have winter décor lying around too?

The Home Hub

Do you have a home hub? That central place where everyone seems to gather naturally just to be with each other? Our living room is certainly ours! That’s why I get so excited to decorate our fireplace mantle each season. It’s the meeting place of our family and so it’s super special to me.

This year I upcycled my old bathroom mirror by turning it into my dream Gold Mirror from Anthropologie! I’m so excited with how it turned out and not just for how it looks but also for the fact that it only cost me $22 to make. You can catch my DIY Anthropologie Gold Mirror post right here.

Scale Back

With a new year I like to scale back with decorations and bring in a lightness that wasn’t there during the holiday season. Consider clearing shelves and adding a simple plant or two. I scaled back our fireplace mantle with a few candles layered over a thrift store vintage book and my favorite cascading plant.

And speaking of light and bright, our fireplace makeover with shiplap is one of my most favorite DIY’s to date! You can find our ship lap accent wall tutorial here. I also shared the before of our red brick fireplace before I got the idea to paint it white. That transformation is drastic, and just with some paint!

Baskets

Baskets are both decorative and functional. Consider then for entryways, bedrooms, and laundry rooms. I picked up this one recently from Homegoods as a catch all spot for our shoes. I also use baskets as planters throughout the house! Many times they go on sale, so keep an open eye 😉.

A Simple Centerpiece

A simple dining room centerpiece instantly freshens up any space. The good news is that it doesn’t take much! Grab a vase and some fresh supermarket florals or greenery and layer it over a cutting board. I placed my wooden beads and a candle over the board too. Again I am using natural texture and tones for the overall same vibes of the house. Below I have linked up my favorite natural textures as well as other favorites for a simple January refresh.
