Ahh the first words of the new year. When I think of a new year, I think blank pages, fresh starts and BLANK WALLS. Yikes! The thought of a blank wall may scare the (beep) out of most of us. We spend a lot of time figuring out what to fill those empty spaces with. It’s how ALL of our favorite home decor stores make a (beep) ton of money! I know I am on a roll with my beeps, today… ‘scuze mee.
But get this: We don’t HAVE TO decorate blank walls. Yeah you read that right.
I personally have learned to love a blank wall for so many reasons.
- There is no pressure to buy something I don’t TRULY LOOOVE which saves me money and headaches.
- There is a satisfaction that comes along with having less in your home and not placing value on the “stuff”.
- Blank walls are really really good for dance parties 😜!
Tips for a Blank Wall
Now if the wall is going to be bare, my only recommendation is that it should be painted in a color that is good for you and your home. And good thing because paint is cheap! Consider the lighting in your space. My home is painted in (mostly) Alabaster White by Sherwinn Williams.
*PAINT HACK ALERT: You may take any color and have it matched in a (cheaper but equally great) paint brand! We take our paint to Lowe’s and get it matched and have saved hundreds with this hack, so get on it!
Ways to Decorate a Blank Wall
Gallery Wall
A Gallery wall can be as busy or as clean as you would like! Luckily Pinterest has tons of ideas if you need a layout. I am also really digging the Polaroid gallery walls for a nostalgic vibe.
Plants
Welcome to 2020 where we still love plants and calling ourselves a “plant lady” (or man!). Plants may be trending but they are also good for us because they purify our air. And with all of the cute baskets and pots to put them in, you can really express yourself! Place them on a stand, the ground, or from the ceiling and feel like queen of all the plant ladies.

Quotes
Signs are a beautiful way to keep your favorite words close to your heart. I have one in my dining room that I shared on my Instagram a few days ago and every time I look at it I am filled with JOY. (That’s how you know you found something you truly love and won’t get tired of!) Check Etsy.

Letter Boards
Everyone loves a good letter board. I love how minimal they are and how they can adapt to your ever changing moods. They don’t do too bad on an Instagram feed either.
Mirror
A good mirror is my favorite way to decorate a blank wall. They open up small places! That’s why I love shopping for mirrors at local thrift stores because they are easy to paint and make the most dramatic difference! Consider the size of the space when determining how large or small the mirror should be.
Baskets
And speaking of budget friendly… how exciting is it that the basket wall trend is IN? Head to a thrift store and start collecting for an epic and beautiful basket wall of your own. Check out HGTV’S website here for how to design your own basket wall!
Wallpaper
Go bold or go home right? Wallpaper is a great idea for an accent wall! Luckily wallpaper has come such a long way that you can easily apply it without professional help… it’s called peel and stick wallpaper 👍. There are TONS of lovely options! We used a shiplap peel and stick wallpaper from target for our pantry makeover. Read about that wallpaper and our pantry from an empty closet makeover here!
Endless
The options are endless when it comes to decorating a blank wall. But when it comes to decorating a wall that you truly LOVE, that takes time. My hope is that you can fill your home with things that mean something to you, without worrying that there is a blank wall to fill. I can’t wait to see how you love your spaces this year… and I’m excited for me too ❤.
